About
the Caucus
HISTORY
Comprised of dozens of diverse organizations, the Caucus for Evidence-Based
Prevention was founded in 2005 for the specific purpose of promoting
HIV prevention supported by sound science at the 2006 International
AIDS Conference in Toronto. The Caucus monitored the use of evidence
in HIV prevention programs and policies, reported on HIV prevention-related
conference proceedings to a wide audience, and alerted the community
when ideology, prejudice, or opinion interfered with evidence-based
approaches to reducing the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
MISSION
The
mission of the US NGO Caucus on Prevention is to highlight and
promote comprehensive, evidence-based approaches to HIV prevention.
OBJECTIVES
• Create a central place for U.S.-based NGOs and their
international partners to convene, share information, and identify
allies and colleagues.
• Provide the HIV/AIDS community before and during the
International AIDS Conferences and beyond with unified messages
and talking points about key HIV prevention issues.
• Perform the key role of watchdog for evidence-based
policy, monitoring groups that promote ideology over sound science.
• Educate our core constituency about the latest developments
in evidence-based HIV prevention.
As scientific
advances over the years have led to the development of effective
prevention, treatment, and care interventions, universal action
is needed now to make prevention accessible. Indeed, this year’s
International AIDS Conference theme, “Universal Action NOW,"
encourages members of the HIV/AIDS community and others to uphold
the promise of evidence-based HIV prevention and to put this evidence
into action. Hence, the Caucus for Evidence-based Prevention’s
unique collaboration of groups affords NGOs the opportunity to
creatively convene and promote a strong HIV prevention agenda
that reflects scientific consensus, rather than ideological or
political positions, in an arena where the world will be listening.
